Copyright 2001 Terry Telford If you use a computer, it will crash. It is not a question of 'if' it is a question of 'when.' And what happens when your computer crashes and you can't get it back online? What happens when, no matter what you do, there is just nothing left on your hard drive? These questions come with easy and hard answers. If you have everything backed up on disk, CD, or tape, there is no problem, it's simply a matter of downloading your saved data and you are back in business. If you haven't backed up your information you could be in trouble and heading for some very expensive repair bills. There are companies who can restore and retrieve information from hard disks that have crashed or mysteriously erased themselves, but it often costs more for data retrieval than it does to buy a new computer. So why do less than 20% of us back up our systems? Because we all think it will never happen to us. There is one thing you can count on in this world, it will happen to you, it's only a matter of time. In addition to backing up everything at least once a week, start an offline filing system. Catalog all of your passwords, favorite websites and other information that you can't live without. Now print it out (yes on paper) and file it in a binder somewhere safe. Although this takes a bit of time, and it is not the most fun job in the world, backing up your system, documents and archives will save you some serious headaches in the future. Take it from me, it only happens to you once and you see the advantages of backing up and offline filing very, very clearly.
