Mind over Milkshakes

The adage that the most valuable lessons in life are learned in the hardest ways may be applied to the hardest activity of all – dieting!

It’s not fun; it’s not easy. But it’s something most of us do, and something at which many of us will fail. And despite the importance of physical activity while dieting, the most successful dieters will tell you that mental activity is equally – if not more – crucial. I am not an expert on dieting because I am a Relationship Coach and not a Health and Wellness Coach but I would like to pass along a few pointers from my own experience.

Some pointers to keep in mind:

Moderation is crucial. New studies come out every week proving that this or that diet is the best. Don’t panic if the routine you’ve chosen comes under scrutiny. Sure, listen to advice – but choose a strategy from a reliable source.

Admit your slips. If you stop for an ice cream, acknowledge it. Don’t abandon your quest because of one slip-up. There is no need to be unmercifully hard on you.

Look at causes. Times of stress are often related to poor diet. Learn your tell tale signs of stress and combat them with exercise or relaxation techniques.

Know yourself. If you always get hungry at 4pm, stave it off by eating fruit at 3:30pm.

Pay attention to how good you feel. Healthy eating feels better. It gives you more energy, among other benefits. Plus you’ll notice you have a feeling of accomplishment and control that gives you power in other areas of your life.
