Tips for Writing Your College EssayTips for Writing Your College Essay By Michelle L. Casto, M.Ed.Your college essay can make or break you. Since it is a reflection of you, (and is used to decide upon your entrance) be sure to take your time choosing a topic carefully. Write about something unique, that jumps off the page and makes the admission representative take a second look. Even if you are a student who isn’t a great writer, you can still write a great essay---as long as you choose a topic close to your heart--- one that you feel passionate about. Here are some tips to consider when writing your college essay: The real subject is “You” No matter what topic you choose, you will ultimately be revealing things that are important to you—your hopes, dreams, aspirations, etc. The most interesting reading comes from writers who are descriptive and detail-oriented Do not be afraid to share who you really are Be sincere and honest Use your own unique voice Write about things/events that people can relate to (human interest) Use real life examples Time is of the essence Give yourself plenty of time to ponder your topic and approach to the essay Start writing it at least a month before the deadline Leave plenty of time to have a mentor read it over and give feedback Write Well Be concise and to the point Use colorful illustrations, quotes or anecdotes to liven up the piece Make the reader see, hear, and feel Edit, Edit, Edit The sign of a good writer is someone who is either a good editor himself or knows a good editor Polish and proofread your essay: composition and grammar count Do not be afraid to start completely over if it doesn’t feel right Research Sample Essays Go to the library to check out books on the subject of writing essays.
