Taking Charge of Your Life

Taking Charge of Your Life

By fabman

How would you like to be in complete control of your life? The truth is that you already are in control of your life, you just don’t know it.

Once we accept responsibility for our lives, we gain control over our lives.

Once we stop making excuses for our shortcomings and failures, we are able to rise above them.

Accepting responsibility for your life and taking charge of your life are synonyms. In other words (literally), they’re the same thing. But isn’t it funny how taking charge sounds more empowering and how quickly you were put on the defensive when we bring up the word responsibility?

If you skirt responsibility, you’ll never be in charge of your life.

I read a post once by Ron Barnhart that spoke about how we have chains in our lives that are holding us back. I think the analogy is a great one.

“One person might let another person control them (husband, wife, parent, etc). Others might be controlled by their desires and emotions. Still others might be controlled by bad habits. In order to truly develop positive self-esteem we need to identify all of the chains in our life and find a way to break free. What are your chains and how do you intend to break them?” – Ron Barnhart

Our chains are the excuses we use for why we’re not successful or not our ideal weight. While we create chains for ourselves, others are out there succeeding in life because they have taken control of their lives. Winners accept their workload. They know that they can choose their attitudes and beliefs. They hold the belief that every failed attempt is a step closer to the end result they desire.

Take responsibility in your own life.

If you’re overweight, it’s your fault. If you’re broke, it’s your fault. If you’re an alcoholic, it’s your fault no matter what a scientist tells you.

It’s time you stopped playing the blame game and started spending your time proactively looking for ways to change your circumstances.

I apologize for this heavy-handed approach, but you must snap out of the fairytale world in which you are just a pawn in someone else’s game. In the game of life, you’re calling the shots…you just might not realize it at this time.

You could quit your job if you’re so miserable. You could go on a healthy diet and exercise more. You could feed your brain daily with useful information instead of the latest sitcom.

You, You, You. It all boils down to you accepting responsibility for your life. You must take the reins of your life and put yourself back in the driver’s seat if you’re going to accomplish any of those goals you hold near and dear to your heart.

What if I don’t want to change? There is a simple cause and effect reaction working here:

If you fail to take responsibility for your actions and your life, you will not have control over your destiny. If you fail to exercise control over your life, your life will not change your current situation. If your situation does not change you will continue to live an unhappy and unrewarding life. Think of your present situation and now see yourself having lived this way for the next 20 or 30 years. Depressing isn’t it?

The good news is that it is totally within your abilities and your mind for you to change your attitude and how you approach your life. Change your attitude from one of passivity to one of proactivity. Resist the temptation to sit idly by while your dreams slowly die and fail to materialize. That is not something you should let happen to you.

So I beg you to please, please stop placing blame elsewhere and take full responsibility for you life. Once you hold yourself accountable for your actions and your life, you will then be able to move forward toward that life you’ve imagined for yourself.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote that “the majority of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” Don’t let yourself become one of those daydreamers. Become a doer and take charge of your life today!

Break those chains that bind you! I wish you the best in your quest.
