The art of wallcoveringsThe Art Of Wallcoverings By John Aufiero Did you ever wonder how hanging paper on the wall ever came about. Well, wallpapering evolved from the early textile hangings and tooled-leather pannels used for warmth as well as for decoration.Paper Sheets printed with designs in one color were occasionally applied to the walls from the 16th century. They became more common about 1700. Today many types of wallpaper are available,From texture effects to small geometric or floral designs or bold, strong patterns.Patterns including reproductions of antique papers in addition to ones that enhance modern decorative schemes are also produced. The type of pattern you would like to use in your home is a matter of preference depending on the theme you are looking for.I have an old home so I like to use victorian type of patterns. You dont want to use a large pattern in an area that is pretty broken up,then you would lose allot of the pattern. There are regular papers, there are coated papers, there are vinyle papers, handprints, strings, silks and more. You want to pick a paper that is practicle for your home. You dont want to use a silk or a string in a hall with kids that will be touching it.A solid vinyle or vinyle coated would be ideal in that situation. Some of your wallpapers today even come already pasted or prepasted. Some you will need to apply the paste.I personally dont like dipping the prepasted papers in water but I know people who do.I apply it to the back with a paint roller. I have been hanging wallpaper steadly now for almost 17 years.I actually was going with my father since I was little.Paper hanging can be traced back 3 generations in my family. My great granfather,my granfather and his brother and thier kids,my dads brother and his kids(my cousins),my dad,me and my brother have all gone into the family trade. It must be in the blood.:-) So,now you know a little about wallpapering and the wallpaper. It takes allot of patience and knowing the many tricks of the trade to do an expert Job. Happy Hanging ;-) John Aufiero =============================================== John Aufiero is the author. He is a 3rd generation paperhanger.
