Owning a cockatiel

So, you think Cockatiels are pretty and sounds like fun?

You are right!!!

However, They are a very intelligent species of bird who needs a lot of interplay with their owner.

If you are not prepared to spend a lot of time interacting with your cockatiel please pick some other kind of bird.

Mine spend lots of time on my shoulder, preening my hair and showing me her affectionate presence.

One thing I must remind you, when choosing your cockatiel pick the other sex. If you are a male pick a female and vice versa. They will respond better.

They may show some jealousy toward your significant other. But not to worry it will most likely "ignore" them.

As for care and feeding it's rather simple; All pet store carry a cockatiel seed mix at more than reasonable price.

However, I recommend you supplement with millet and fruit and vegetable. You can only try a variety as most are very fussy as to what they prefer. My last cockatiel loved spinach this one totally ignores it but loves oranges.

Water must be fresh! In those warm days of summer you may want to change the water a few time daily.

I let my bird fly all over the house and i do not go after her when she return to the cage. Which tells her that it is her sanctuary.

When she feels in the mood for human contact she comes out on her own... PLEASE! Do not let the bird get out of the house...Winter will kill them!

Avoid drafts! They are subject to colds and if they survive it the hefty vet bill might kill you:-)

Just kidding! Vets do a wonderful job and deserve every penny.

But seriously! I highly recommend you get some literature on cockatiel prior to buying yours, it will give you all the neccesary information you will need. Your local library or used book store even the thrift store might have books at very affordable prices.

And your happy cockatiel will pay you back with unlimited love and affection for years. They are known to live up to 20 years in "Captivity".

in closing, they may be demanding pets but they give back all that you can give...

and much, much more.
