3 Secrets of Broadcast Interviews that MOVE PRODUCTS!by Marisa D'Vari http://www.deg.com mailto:mdvari@deg.com Author, Media Magic: Profit and Promote with FREE Media Placement"I read your book, Media Magic and know all about creating three key message points," a woman in a beige suit gushed to me after a recent talk. "But every time I'm interviewed on TV, or even radio, the host asks me a question and I end up answering it to be polite. By the time I'm finished, the host shakes my hand and sends me on my way!" DON'T LET the media boss you around! You worked hard to get on that show! You invested a lot of TIME and ENERGY, even money in printing extra books or products, in preparation. Make sure your message points are heard! True, you are an invited "guest" and must fulfill your tacit promise to provide value and content to the show. Also, realize that viewers to the show owe their allegiance to the host, not you -- ----If you are rude to the host, as I've seen a top exercise guru be to his host at QVC, you risk a barrage of hate mail. So, what to do? Boomerang your message! Let's say that you have written a diet book that is based on weight control through the subconscious mind. Your three points are these: 1. It's not what we eat, it's the subconscious thoughts and beliefs that make us eat. 2. You can eat cheesecake and STILL lose weight. 3. Exercise is not necessary. You have prepared with all the whys, hows, and personal anecdotes to support each of these points. You no sooner launch into your 1st point, "Host, did you know that all we have to do is program our mind to be thin --" when the host throws a curveball, asking your thoughts about the current lawsuits against McDonalds fat people are blaming the fast food eatery for not offering enough of a selection of low calorie food). A meek guest, like the woman in beige, might be polite and answer the question. She didn't write about the issue in her book, but she politely airs her thoughts -- "well, McDonalds does offer diet cokes, and they could have chosen a salad without dressing ..." A Deg.Com media trained guest has verve and energy! "Great Point! I feature a great anecdote in my book, Diet Magic, about a postal worker who actually lost weight eating lunch every day in a fast food restaurant similar to McDonalds -- ---"Which illustrates my key point that dieting is really in your head! On the same topic, another key message your audience would benefit from is that you can actually lose weight eating all the cheesecake you want!" Okay, so how did the guest get back control of the show? 1. Complimented the host for a great question. 2. TIED the question back to an issue in his/her book, USING THE BOOK'S TITLE. 3. Underscores the KEY POINT. 4. SNEAKS in the SECOND KEY point before the host can get in another deflecting question! Marisa D'Vari is the President of Deg.com Communications.
