Eight Days A Week

(c) 2001, By Rozey Gean, Marketing-Seek.com

In today's busier-than-ever-before society, I frequently make contact with an individual who is looking for that eighth day in every week. "If only there were eight days in a week, I could accomplish all I have to do." The cold, hard reality of the matter is, as most of us already know, it does not matter how many days there are in a week. If you cannot accomplish it in seven, you are not going to make it happen in eight. The key to making your seven days work for you is to work your seven days to your advantage. This amazing feat can be accomplished by establishing goals, priorities, preferences, learning to say no, and becoming down right selfish with your time.

A friend of mine recently accompanied her mother to the hospital for a stress test. Sara's mother is a 59 year old widow, works full time, and is totally devoted to her job and church activities, both of which in some aspect manages to consume every waking moment of her life. She rarely takes time out for herself. She eats on the run. She never exercises. She is now experiencing signs of health risk. Sara sat patiently in the same room with her mother as the test was being administered. She listened carefully to every word spoken by the technician and attending physician. The diagnosis was that Sara's mom did not eat right nor have enough physical activity in her life. She is at that stage in life where she must take action.

As the physician began to describe the perfect dietary and fitness plan, Sara's mom blurted out, "I do not have time for all of that! I am a busy woman . . . " and proceeded to tell the physician all about her hectic schedule. Before she got too far into her defense saga, the physician said to her, "We all have the same 168 hours in a week, and we all must choose how we use them." Sara and her speechless mom left the hospital, Sara soaking in this profound statement and her mother babbling on about not having time for this kind of thing.

When Sara shared this story with me, it really hit home. We are all given the same 24 hours in a day, a whopping 168 hours in every week. Even if we manage to sleep 8 hours each day, we still have 112 hours each week or 16 hours each day, to accomplish the tasks and objectives that lead to our goals and desires in life. The key to doing this successfully is to learn to break down your day into tidbits that you can easily manage that entail a combination of work, exercise, leisure, family and friends, and other obligations that life brings your way. Creating a balance that you can comfortably live with is important.

A good starting point would be to sit down on Sunday evening and map out everything you know of at that time you must accomplish during the week ahead of you. Jot down all appointments and dated tasks in your scheduler. Go through your list of things that have to be accomplished and begin to roughly pencil them in. As you do so, leave yourself some breathing space. These time slots can be used to grab a healthy lunch, take a brief walk, run a couple of errands, read a book, take a short drive alone to clear your head, or just about anything that will be of benefit to you so that you are not constantly working or thinking about work. Determine a definite point that will be your cut off time for the day. Shut down your computer and close the door. Walk away until the beginning of another workday.

This scenario will only work if you allow it to. It takes a well-disciplined entrepreneur to create a healthy balance between work and play. Your health, mental well-being, and even that of your family depends on your being able to make your seven days a week work for you. No matter how much additional time you wish for, you are going to be given the same 168 hours each week! Make your 168 hours work for you-your life may depend on it!
