"Today's Devotion": (08/18/03) Slow Down You Move Too Fast"Today's Devotion" For August 18, 2003Read: I Corinthians 13 Psalm 130 SLOW DOWN YOU MOVE TOO FAST by Rev. Richard Boeck "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I put my hope."(Ps.130:5) The young, successful executive was traveling very quickly down the neighborhood street in his new Jaguar. Watching for kids darting out from between parked cars, his Jag was suddenly hit by a brick. Slamming on his brakes he bolted from his car and went back to where the brick had been thrown. There he found a young boy whom he angrily grabbed and pushed up against a parked car shouting, "Why did you throw that brick? It's going to cost you a lot of money." "Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do," the lad pleaded. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop." His face stained with tears, the boy pointed to a spot just around a parked car. "It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up." Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me." Deeply moved, the young executive gently lifted the handicapped boy back into his wheelchair and tried to clean up some of his cuts and scrapes. He would be okay. "Thank you and may God bless you," the grateful brother told the executive as he pushed his wheelchair bound brother down the sidewalk toward home. Walking slowly back to his Jaguar, the executive surveyed the damage. It was noticeable, but he never bothered to repair it. Instead, he kept the dent as a reminder that we shouldn't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick to get our attention. How grateful we are that God has forgiven us of our sins and calls us to service in His name. He puts people who are hurting and in need of His love into our paths each day so that we might share Jesus Christ with them. As His disciples, He calls us to a life of service and love in His name. And, as the young Jag owner found out, we need to slow down and listen for the opportunities to receive God's blessings and to share in His love and mercy. Sometimes, in order to truly serve the Lord and to share Christ with people, we need to be reminded to "Slow down, you move too fast." Prayer: Father, I know that my life is full of so much hustle and bustle that I'm unlikely to remember what's best for me. Too often I allow myself to be so busy that I fail to take the time to spend time with You. Too often I'm in so much of a hurry that I don't have the time to talk to others about Your love. Please forgive me for such thoughtlessness and help me to be an effective messenger of Your love for the world in Christ, my Savior and Lord; in whose name I pray. Amen. --Pastor Boeck Copyright @2003. All rights reserved.
