Overnight Success?I remember watching my Dad start up his own business. He picked a great product that there was a demand for and a great time to sell it. He went into the automotive parts business right after World War II. During that time, no one had a lot of money, so most people couldn't afford to buy a new car. Therefore, more and more people were fixing the cars they had and there was a great demand for parts. My Dad rented a small building and set about making contacts with the parts companies. There was a great demand for the parts, but the supply was shorter than demand, so he had to really work to meet the right people and "schmooze" them to get them to "allow" him to sell their parts. He knew this would take time, but he was determined to be a success at his business. After months of working at this, he finally had enough sources he felt he could provide most of what would be needed so he could open for business. He knew also that customer service was the key to a good business, so he put his home phone number on the front door and said to call after hours if they needed anything. I can't count the number of times the phone rang at 2 or 3 in the morning. My Dad would get up and get dressed and go down to the store to meet a mechanic who needed a part. Sometimes it would be a sparkplug - a $2.00 item. Did he grouse and complain when he got back? You bet! But did he stop doing it? Not for a second. And what did all that hard work, long hours, and dedication and focus get him? It got him a very successful business that paid for he and my Mom to build their dream home, paid for us to take a long vacation every year, paid for me to go to college and get my degree and eventually paid for my parents to live comfortably in retirement from the sale of the business. What's my point? I have several: 1. You cannot build a lucrative business overnight. 2. You must stay focused and keep your goals in mind. 3. Customer service is THE most important thing you'll do. 4. ANYONE can have a SUCCESSFUL business if they don't give up and are willing to put the work in it it requires. 5. You'll NEVER be a success if you keep switching around and never truly build any of your opportunities. 6. If you give up, it won't happen. ======================================= Pamela Geiss is the owner of the successful marketing company LotsaPerks.
