Affiliate Url Too Long?Affiliate Url too Long? by Nucha Aquino Seen from the ads submitted to our newsletter that most of our subscribers are affiliates to something. Know it right away from your affiliate Url, friends. There are some disadvantages when you advertise the product using these Urls with affiliate IDs attached to it. 1. Not all email softwares let Urls "clickable" or "copy and paste"-able. If people will have to type the whole address to the browser, do you think they are going to type in your affiliate ID after the domain? I, for one, am not. Moreover, if your Url is longer than 65 charactors, some email softwares will abuse it until it's changed to something else (or being shown in two lines -- hard to copy and paste). Now, no matter how good your ad writing skill is, people just cannot find the way to buy your product. If the Url is not like www.adtrackingservice.com/x-iixx?x or www.affiliatetrackingservice.com/cgi-bin/productID/affID=xxxx, which typing only the main domain page would not work, then there's a chance that you will lose the sale to the merchant themselves when people arrive their homepages (or selling pages) without your ID ?xxxxx suffixed to the Url. 2. Honestly, do you remember your long affiliate Url? Would it be much better if you do not have to refer to your notes (or copy it from somewhere) all the time? What if you made a mistake? Ooops! hope the mistake was for the free ezine ad, not the paid one. 3. Say... you are working with a Clickbank Merchant. You'll get a http://hop.clickbank.net/?yournickname/merchantID kind of Url, right? How can you be sure that other Clickbank agents will not just copy your ad, put his nickname instead of yours, and start stealing your prospect? He might even buy the product himself, through his nickname, using his wife's credit card! One way you can avoid this is redirecting the traffic from your website to the merchant's selling page. You can do this easily by simply insert the meta refresh tag into the HEAD of a web page that you would like to be your promotional page for the product. This would look like this:
Just put this little code in the part of your webpage underneath the word "HEAD". For WYSIWYG programs such as Frontpage, you can use the command "insert HTML" or something like that. Then you can SAVE the new page as a page of your web-site, the address will be like "http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/PRODUCT.html". Looks much better, do you think? Aside from getting a nicer address that you can promote the product from your own website, you also create awareness for your domain name. If the product you are promoting is of good quality, you can no doubt sell something else from your same domain in future. Do not have a website? Get one. You can even get a free host with a subdomain for the start. See my website: http://www.eLaguna.net/web_hosting.htm for the list of FREE and cheap hosting services you can get. And I wish you good luck in your affiliating business. ========^^========^^=========^^========^^========^^======== Nucha Aquino is the publisher of eLaguna Weekly Newsletter.
