Reality. What a concept!As a business coach, I'm seeing a pattern in the questions that new clients ask me. Usually, one of the very first questions they ask me is, "How long before I can realistically expect to earn an income through doing business on the Internet"?Since each client is different, the answer to this question is not an easy one, but there are some points I like to make right off the bat, considering that there are usually months of HYPE and downright LIES that people are exposed to that have to be 'righted'. HYPE: "Start your own business, and earn $10,000 by next week!" (this one comes in a variety second only to Baskin Robbins 31 flavors, all of which promise to earn you big cash in short amounts of time) Reality: If you are new to the Internet, and have not yet established yourself as a legitimate business, it would take a rather large miracle for this to happen for you. What these ads, and super hyped up programs don't tell you, is that you need an already established client base to sell to in order to see profits quickly. A responsive opt-in list of people that have asked to receive news of new product offerings is how people see these kinds of results. Harsh Reality: If you're new to the Internet, and fall for the hype of overnight riches, the best you can hope for is to trap other relatively *new* Internet business wanna-be's into believing the same hype you fell for. Then, you get to deal with all the unhappy emails and/or phone calls asking why they didn't get rich overnight. Solution: Suck it up! If you've fallen victim to one of these ploys, don't perpetuate the vicious cycle by drawing more innocents into the scheme of things. Cut your losses, and forget about the overnight riches. Stop looking for the easy way out, and admit to yourself that anything worth doing, is worth doing correctly. Once you've faced reality, you'll find that the best advice can be found through diligence, and hard work. Don't have a service or product to offer? Build a content rich site, and offer related items through affiliate programs. Use these items yourself, and offer your opinion to your site's visitors... speak from experience. Through your research, testing and content gathering, keep your eyes and ears open for problems that need to be solved among your target audience. Make it your mission to solve these problems through developing your own product or service. Yes, I'm being vague. Yes, I'm repeating information you've no doubt heard before. Yes, this is the long road to success, but you know what? It's the TRUE path to success too... and if you've heard it all before, but didn't believe it, perhaps hearing it this time will actually make you believe it! Success does not happen overnight. When you're ready to believe that, and do something about it, then you're ready to understand that starting any business, online or off, takes your consistent, and diligent effort.
